Some months ago I was approached by David Hacker about a peal at Bromham to celebrate Dennis Powney’s sixty years of continuous membership of the Guild.
After consultation with John Drew, the Churchwarden, it was agreed that a peal should be rung and the date was set for December 6th, the feast of St Nicholas the patron Saint of our Parish Church.
Now, we Bromham ringers have a curious tradition of holding our Annual ‘Christmas Lunch’ in July. But this had not happened in 2016 so I thought we would hold it at the right time for a change. Even though some could not make it due to work commitments, a good few ringers, past and present, assembled at the Greyhound to wait for the peal band to join us.
I had not mentioned the peal to Dennis until the band had begun to ring so it was a big surprise. Dennis and I went to the tower just as the ringing finished and congratulated the band. We noted from the two peal boards on the wall that this had been the first peal rung at St Nicholas’ since 1975.
There was just time for a photo or two before heading off to the pub for a well-deserved drink and celebratory meal. What better way to mark our Patronal Festival?
