Christine Purnell – Celebrating 60 Years of Ringing

When Chris Purnell was a Girl Guide she, along with other Girl Guiders in her pack, was invited to learn to ring at St Margaret’s, Stratton St Margaret (near Swindon). She very soon gave up Guiding as she much preferred ringing and to this day she has always said she made the right decision!

In celebration of her 60 years of ringing, on 29 April Chris rang a Quarter Peal of 1260 Grandsire and Plain Bob Doubles at Lacock with daughters Helen and Karen and some of her best ringing friends.

Over her 60 years, Chris has had many wonderful ringing experiences and has acquired a large number of ringing friends, however the highlight of her ringing career so far has been her work with the young group of ringers at Edington Ringing Centre who became known as “The Edingers”.

At our Branch EGM on 3 May the intention was to present Chris with flowers in recognition of her dedication and hard work at Edington Ringing Centre, where she has been an absolute stalwart since its’ opening in January 2010. Unfortunately, as our meeting drew to a close, Chris dashed off to run the Learners’ Practice at Edington, so the flowers had to be presented to her husband Bob! Thankfully, Bob presented these to Chris on her arrival home (see picture).
