Belfry Upkeep – Stays and Sliders

The stay and slider form a mechanism which enables the bell to be ‘set’ in the up position by holding it just past the balance. The stay and slider are usually made out of Ash, although alternative designs are seen on some older rings. The stay also acts as a ‘safety valve’ and will break if the bell is set too hard avoiding damage to other, more expensive, parts of the installation.

Stays may get broken occasionally, especially when teaching learners. Stays should be checked for excessive damage on a regular basis by the steeple keeper. A broken, badly worn or cracked stay should be replaced and can be obtained from bell hangers or local woodworkers.

For a comprehensive guide to stays and sliders, their inspection, maintenance and replacement, check out the Belfry Upkeep section of the CCCBR website at https://belfryupkeep.cccbr.org.uk/docs/080-stays-and-sliders/
