Sound management
The Towers and Belfries committee
A Central Council publication
This month’s review is a pamphlet on sound management, produced by the Towers and Belfries committee of the Central Council of Church Bell Rangers.
At 12 pages long it’s not intended to be a detailed technical reference. It’s more of an overview of the subject, giving general guidance on approaches to sound management, inside and outside of the tower. This includes partial sound barriers and sound shadows, material types and varying sound situations including, too much, too little, uneven, and confused sound – where echoes and long reverberations result in a confused soundscape for ringers.
At the back of the pamphlet are some sources of further advice on the topic. The reality of ringing is that while many people enjoy the sound of bells, others do not. Understanding the soundscape of your tower to improve the ringing environment both inside the ringing chamber, and also what might be employed to reduce sound levels close to a tower may prove a useful read. £1.50
