Book of the month – Ringing Circles

Ringing Circles – A guide to learning basic methods by Chris Adams
IBSN 0-900271-64-7

We all learn in different ways. What works for some people, just doesn’t hit the spot for others. As a book Ringing Circles is an accessible, easy read. The book presents a number of different bellringing methods from an alternative viewpoint, by introducing the circle of work. In effect a circular flowchart of the key information for a particular bell ringing method. Each circle of work is presented alongside the method line and an informative description of the method, with hints, tips and things to be aware of. Tables of work at the bobs and singles are also included.

As the Introduction to this book points out, when learning ‘in the early stages there is only a limited amount of thinking time available between each blow’. Being able to visualise the circle of work whilst ringing a method is a useful tool to remember the next piece of work for that method in the limited time available. From Plain Bob Doubles, Grandsire Doubles, Stedman Doubles, to Single Oxford Bob Triples and Cambridge Surprise Major. Twenty-four methods from doubles to major and some useful callings for doubles are included in this useful book.

Well worth your consideration. If, like me, you initially find the method line with its blue and red lines, somewhat impenetrable and difficult to remember.
