East Dorset Striking Competition

The East Dorset Branch Striking competition was held on Saturday 14th June at Shroton, a lovely sunny day!

Though there weren’t many teams taking part, the day was nevertheless a good fun occasion. The novice teams from Corfe Mullen and Canford Magna rang first, with thanks to David and Flick Warwick for judging.

Corfe Mullen were the winners of the competition, and one of their band has written an account of their experience:

On Saturday 14th June I competed in my first Striking Competition. I was a little nervous but excited to see what happens. While we waited for our turn it was nice to catch up with ringers we hadn’t seen in a while and refreshments where available to enjoy while listening to the ringing outside.

When it was our turn, we went in and had the rules read. We then had 5 minutes to practice and sort out any ropes, all this was watched and timed by one of the judging team. When we where ready the treble strikes 4 times and we started.

Once we had finished, we waited for the judge’s results. They were explained clearly, positivity and professionally. It was very interesting to hear about their thoughts and how the scoring was done and how we could improve.

We then got to enjoy the rest of the afternoon, the judge went into detail on how the next groups would be marked and we could have a go at marking yourselves for fun, listening to the next groups ringing which was very good.

It was a lovely afternoon, and nice to do something different, rather than the same branch practices each month. I would recommend that other groups give it a go, it’s great practice with your team, you never know you might come away with a trophy.

The Novice section was followed by the method ringing competition with Blandford and Wimborne being the competitors. Due to a last minute lack of judges this was judged by our own Mariko Whyte and Bob Crighton who agreed in Wimborne having the edge this year.

Well done to all the bands who entered and we’re looking forward to a bigger and better event next year!
