How Bells are Tuned

Bells aren’t just one note, you know, they actually produce a complex sound of several notes making a chord.

If a bell isn’t tuned properly some of the notes of the chord may not be in tune with each other making it sound harsh or even unpleasant, but when tuned well a bell delivers the rich, slightly mournful sound typical of English church bells.

Here’s a great video from Taylor’s Bellfoundry explaining the intricacies of bell tuning and showing how they tune an out-of-tune bell.
