In memoriam — Alan Harrison

Alan Sidney Harrison, Sturminster Newton, Dorset.
10th October 1941 – 24th January 2024.

Born during World War II in Steyning, West Sussex, Alan was enrolled as a choirboy at the local church and then, as a teenager, was taught to ring the bells there. He continued this at Southampton University where he studied modern languages and became friends with Richard Taylor, with whom he enjoyed many bell-ringing trips across the UK. On one occasion Alan drove them in someone else’s Morris Minor to Scotland, taking their own bell ropes just in case the towers had any missing!

After University Alan worked for the Milk Marketing Board which brought him in 1963 to Sturminster Newton (then a focal point of the dairy industry). And it was here that he met his future wife, Felicity.

Following his post graduate teacher training, Alan was eventually appointed Deputy Head at Manston Primary School, before transferring to Child Okeford. He then moved to become Head Teacher at Durweston First School for over ten years, finally moving to William Barnes Primary School in Sturminster Newton where he taught until his retirement.

As well as being an integral part of the team of ringers for many years at St Mary’s, Sturminster Newton, he was also involved in many local ventures: local Rights of Way Liaison Officer; with the local carnival; the local doctor’s surgery patient group; supporting the Countryside Ranger Service; and at the Methodist Church in Sturminster Newton.

At St Mary’s church he looked after the clock for many years, climbing the 60ft. metal ladder each Saturday to wind up the three heavy stone weights, one at a time, as well as extra visits to ensure the clock was keeping time.

Meanwhile, his contribution to bell ringing went further than just being a member of the band, and he helped to train many ringers locally. He was made an Associate Life Member of the Salisbury Diocesan Guild of Ringers in 2021 after health issues meant he was no longer able to ring.

A quarter peal was rung for Alan on Sunday 21st April at St Mary’s, Sturminster Newton, by the local band, possibly the first time in living memory an all Sturminster Newton band has rung a quarter.
