Line Walking at Lytchett Matravers

Having Time To Talk About Bob Doubles Theory

2½ years ago Debbie went on one of the Bradfield ringing courses and was inspired by one of the extra sessions called Blue Line Walking and has tried to do the same at Lytchett Matravers during a ringing session but finding there wasn’t really enough time. But now we had quite a few moving on to Bob Doubles she thought it a good idea to have a longer 2 hour session. With resources from that session to hand we were set. It was useful for the treble ringer who had not really looked at or understood the working bells to see that when she got down to lead all the other bells were doing ‘twiddly bits’ in the middle. We also managed to have a go at a quiz while having tea and cake and enjoy a short handbell session at the end. (Next time we will try using the handbells whilst Blue Line Dancing). Louise continues the story below.

What our learners said

On a wet Saturday afternoon ringers from 3 different towers of all abilities gathered together for a Bob Doubles theory session ran by Debbie. We went through Plain Hunt on 5 and then 6 walking through our places as bells and seeing how the other bells worked with us. We then moved on to Plain Bob Doubles and even managed some Bobs.To begin with it’s difficult to get your head around the bells moving up and down the place markers in the centre but after a few false starts and remembering to do extra places in 5ths place we got there. It was excellent to actually walk the blue line and physically see the moment of the bells. Everyone got something out of it and for me it was a better understanding of what happens during a piece of work by seeing the 2 bells dodging, the bell in 2nds place having nowhere to go so making another blow in 2nds and back to lead and the bell in 5ths place also not able to start hunting in so doing 2 more blows in 5ths place. The tenor ringer could see what happens at the back. Treble understood what the inside bells do and the inside bells enjoyed seeing which way they go and how the circle of work is used. Debbie got together some great resources from ART including different diagrams of the work and we discussed different terminology used including the course/before and after bells. I'd highly recommend having ago in your tower sometime.

Yes, another way of understanding the work of PBD bells was of value to me …

Thanks Debbie for the session I did pick up a few things but still think I’ve a long way to go.

Few more things seem to have dropped in place ref BD
