In 2017 a young man called Ben attended an open evening at Heddington to find out about bellringing. Shortly afterwards he started lessons – joined by his Father, Jeroen – after all he was going to be there anyway, so he might as well learn too! Ben made good progress, although this was impeded by covid. On 1st November Ben was part of a band that rang a quarter peal of Grandsire Doubles to complete all the work to gain Learning the Ropes level 5. Well done Ben. Ben has also taken on the role of steeple keeper and has been very involved with training the two most recent learners at Heddington. Ben’s younger brother also rings and rang his first quarter peal in November 2024.
Interestingly, the band on 1st November included Philip Hacker and Edward Spearey who both learnt to ring at Heddington in the early 60’s – in fact there is a small plaque on the wall recording that they rang a quarter peal together on 31st January 1965 for the death of Winston Churchill.
