Church bellringing in the Salisbury Diocese

Book of the Month

The Learning Curve – volumes 1, 2, 3 & 4

Edited by John Harrison.

“The Learning Curve” was first launched as a regular monthly Ringing World feature back in June 1999 and still pops up from time-to-time.

Volumes 1 to 4 are a compilation of the articles from 1999 to 2007, collected together in four handy A5 sized paperbacks for those of us that don’t have a back catalogue of the articles.

The aim of the articles was to cater for all aspects of learning from beginner to experienced ringer, some of which were a response to readers requests. As a result the articles are wide ranging in their subject matter from bell handling, rope-sight and learning methods through to conducting, Double Oxford, singles in Stedman Doubles, Yorkshire on higher numbers and Judging.

The articles are a mixed bag of the practical, personal experience and informed opinion and each of the volumes contains this mix. The front of each book lays out the Contents of the volume. The back of each volume has a comprehensive Index and a Reference list of the publications and training resources referred to in the original “Learning Curve” articles.

My feeling is the volumes contain something for everyone, whether it be practical advice, or food for thought and a “started for ten” discussion point up the tower, or perhaps, in the pub after practice. Worth a punt at £3 per volume.

Volume 1. 1999 – 2001. 30 articles.
Volume 2. 2002 – 2003. 24 articles.
Volume 3. 2004 – 2005. 24 articles.
Volume 4. 2006 – 2007. 24 articles.
