Church bellringing in the Salisbury Diocese

Guild Quarter Peal Week Report

2nd – 10th November 2024

55 successful quarter peals were rung during the week. The majority scored were Doubles (34),  followed by Minor (11), Triples (4), Major (2), Caters (2) and Cinques (2). Two from this total were rung on handbells, and one on a simulator.

The leading Branch was East Dorset (15), followed by Devizes (13), Salisbury (7), Calne (6), West  Dorset (4), Dorchester (3), Marlborough (2), Mere (2) and Channel Islands (2). One QP was rung at  Orange, NSW.

Many congratulations to all organisers, conductors and ringers who took part in these successes –  and especially to the ten first quarter pealers: David Hunter, Robert Johnson, Margaret Lomas,  Jemima McLeod, Caroline Noonan, Lucie Payne, Nigel Talbott, Sue Taylor, Jenny Thorpe and  Oscar von Alstede.

Notes from the Guild President

Thank you to everyone who contributed to Guild Quarter Peal Week; as you will see from David Warwick’s Report, 53 quarter peals were rung during the ‘week’ with contributions from all Branches.

Special congratulations and well done to the ten first-quarter-pealers listed by David, we hope it will be the first of many more.

Do read the article on the website from the Marlborough Branch – First Quarter (in more ways than one) which really does catch the value of this annual event in the Guild calendar.

There were other notable firsts: Aidan Wright, his first as Conductor at Worth Matravers – keep up the conducting Aidan – also worth mentioning were several ‘first-in-method’ for some of the band, including Grandsire Triples and Caters, Pudsey Bob Triples (a method devised by Jack Pease for Children in Need), Bob Doubles and Stedman Triples. Some personal milestones were achieved by Andrew Woolley at Bremhill, 700th as Conductor and Tim Rose at Lychett Matravers ringing his 100th quarter this year – congratulations to you both.

A number of the quarters were dedicated to the memory of Peter Thorn HLM who passed away on October 29th. Peter had been a ringer at Melksham for over 40 years.

There will have been quarter peals attempted throughout the week but ‘lost’ which is very disappointing as I know, having been in two attempts myself which came to grief. You can always take up the challenge and have another ‘go’ later.

I hope all of you who took part in the ringing enjoyed the experience and will be encouraged to go on and achieve more, especially if it was a first for you.
