June Ringing Update

Master’s Message

Although the sunny days have gone away for a while, we were fortunate to have a beautiful day for the AGM on 10th May at Canford Magna. A wide variety of ringing took place from Call changes to London Surprise Minor by around 70 people who then attended the meeting. The East Dorset team looked […]

Fresh hope for the Band and Bells at Lydlinch

An appeal for new learners and a ‘Tea in the Garden’ event to raise money for bell repairs have secured the short term future of the tower at St Thomas a Beckett Lydlinch, Dorset. Following concerns raised in early 2024 about the condition of its bells and a dwindling number of locals to ring them, […]

But what should it sound like?

When I was first learning to ring (in fact for a long time after, if truth be told) when ‘good ringers’ spoke about how good or bad the striking was I did what most adults do when they don’t understand something – I nodded sagely in agreement so as to disguise my ignorance! Had I […]

Dry Weather Highlights Archaelological Remains

Salisbury is renowned among ringers as being one of only three cathedrals in the country to not have bells hung for change ringing. This was not always the case – for several hundred years there stood a separate bell tower, in the cathedral close. The recent dry weather has made the location of the 13th […]

Ring Out For Peace – 8th May

A call for all ringers to join in the National celebration in May. On the 8th May 1945 bells rang out across Britain as the nation took to the streets for Victory in Europe Day, the celebration of the end of six years of the Second World War. Eighty years later people across the country […]

Novice Striking Competition - 12 July

This year´s Novice Striking Competition will take place during the afternoon of Saturday 12th July at Motcombe where the delightful 7cwt six are rung from the first floor. The emphasis on the event is that it should be sociable and enjoyable with the opportunity to improve striking and for us all to encourage our Novice ringers. Bands entering are free to choose the ringing of rounds or call changes and those entering will not have previously rung a quarter peal on a treble or an inside bell.

West Dorset Ringer of the Year

When Tim took up ringing again in 2020, he would happily admit that his ringing was somewhat rusty and, having not rung since the early 90s when he learnt on a medium weight ring of 6 in Winchester, he found himself confronted by a somewhat heavier peal of 8 in Sherborne with its 46cwt tenor. He has progressed from sometimes dubious Grandsire Triples to being able to ring Surprise Major, and
