Skills Development

A foundation skill for good ringing is the ability to listen to the bells and identify striking imperfections.

At first this seems an absolute impossibility – our brains are so overwhelmed by the need to handle the rope and try to see the other ropes to follow, that we believe we simply can’t hear the bells.

In fact, in all but the most rare of cases, this is not true. Our ears will be hearing everything but our brains will be filtering the sound out to give our conscious brain enough time to process everything else. In the beginning, we simply don’t have enough brain capacity to process everything, but as our muscle memory develops regarding handling and ropesight we begin to have enough capacity to understand what our ears are hearing, too.

I believe strongly that it’s important to develop this essential skill through concentrating on some simple exercises and this link will open a lesson in the form of a ‘quiz’ which takes you through a series of recordings which will help you to develop your skills.

Even if you’ve convinced yourself that you can’t hear your bell, I am certain that, if you work through this series of recordings you will be amazed how quickly your listening skill will develop.

In each of the ten short recordings one bell is making a striking error. Your job is to identify which bell and whether it is striking early or late.

In questions 1 to 7 the error is by the same bell on both strokes, 8 to 10 the error is on one stroke only.

This quiz is all about listening skills.  Even if you have trouble hearing striking errors it is worth working through it as it will most certainly help you to improve your listening skills.
