Book of the Month

Teaching Tips

Pip Penney – Central Council of Church Bell Ringers Education Committee.

The introduction to this book states “Teaching tips is designed for any ringer starting to teach for the first time”. This book is well laid out with a mixture of text, diagrams, tables, and explanatory photo montages to illustrate bell handling exercises. The sections of the book cover, learning, teaching skills, coaching, initial bell handling through to early learner practices, Plain Hunt, Bob Doubles and teaching touches. It’s a thoughtful, informative read, with some good ideas for learner practices to improve the skills & confidence of the new ringer.

Teaching, or training, is not easy, in addition to the technical competence needed to teach people basic bell handling and beyond, you also need the ability to communicate clearly to your learners. Taking time to understand the needs of your learners and how they best understand is invaluable. Different people learn in different ways and at different rates, “one size definitely does not fit all”, so being flexible in your teaching approach is essential to allow your learners to, “get it”. This approach is bought out in the section on Coaching, where motivation, goals & feedback are also discussed.

In my experience the best teachers/trainers are those that are positive, kind, patient, encouraging and communicate well with their learners. They make learning an enjoyable & satisfying experience. “Teaching Tips” in its 46 pages aims to present you with the key tips you need when starting to teach for the first time. At £4 this book is well worth your consideration.
