During 2023 we organised quarter peals each Sunday for Evensong ringing. This served several purposes – (a) focusing method learning and forward progression within the band (b) providing an opportunity for sustained ringing to improve rhythm and concentration (c) giving a different experience from Sunday morning and practice night touches and (d) offering some Sunday evenings off.
46 quarters were successfully scored, including 21 of Maximus and 14 of Cinques. This figure of 35 twelve-bell quarters is more than double that of any other tower in the country. We are fortunate in having several able conductors in the band, and the composition learning and ringing direction was shared by six different ringers. 44 people took part in total with 21 ringers achieving at least 10 quarters each. Stedman Cinques was the most popular method, followed by Bristol Maximus.
Three of our young ringers gained their first quarter peals – the bands are in the photos below: left Ben Avery, middle Esther Davey, right Ewan Ayres.
