First Quarter on 10 at Calne

The first quarter peal was rung on the augmented ring of 10 bells at Calne St Mary on Remembrance Sunday. It was half-muffled and included three firsts on 10 bells.

It was due to have started by 4.00pm, with the aim that the bells would be ringing during sunset. At 4.05pm, we only had 8 ringers and we were considering ringing triples instead. Fortunately the other two ringers arrived and the quarter started around 4.15pm. The quarter went without incidence and came round about 5.10pm in 54 minutes.

The ringers included five Calne St Mary ringers, two Calne branch ringers, Bob Purnell (who was the Diocesan Bell Adviser during the early stages of the project), David Kelly (representing the Keltek Trust, who donated the second bell) and David Hacker (who has had a long association with the Calne Branch and is a past president of the SDGR).

We consider it appropriate that the first quarter peal on the new treble bell should be on Remembrance Sunday. This bell was donated by the SDGR as a Salisbury Guild Memorial Bell. It bears the inscription “In memory of all ringers from the Salisbury Diocese lost in time of war”.
